AVSL ROUND 8 WRAP UP
Plenty of great performances from athletes leading into the Victorian Country Championships the following weekend. Lots of exciting performances to watch!
Wind was not exactly in a predictable manner this weekend, as it swirled and swirled. With headwinds, to illegal tailwinds, Llanberris did not let us down!
The 800m was the first track event to take place on Saturday. Our first victor was Hudson Downes (WEN) who was unlucky not to break the 2 min barrier running a time of 2:00.24, with Ben Mornane (EKA) second in 2:00.57 and Oaklee Burge (BHA) 2:00.81 finishing in third. Our most impressive points scorer was Archie Grant (EKA), who scored 441 points with his time of 2:07.08. Well done!!!
The girls saw Katherine Dowie (EKA) take the win with a time of 2:14.82, followed closely behind by Lucy Jones (EKA) who ran 2:15.75. Lucy Jones was the most impressive point scorer, with 449. Paige Tuddenham (BYC) scored 445 and Aria Violini (BYC) scored 443.
The walks only saw a few athletes competing. Stephen McLennan was the first over the line in 9:25.95.
The hurdles in Ballarat is typically not a Ballarat featured event, however we do have some consistent athletes who do quite well when they compete! Kiana Jenkins (BHA) while having to race a boy on her own held her ground to run 78.86 in the 400m Hurdles, scoring 366 points. In the 300m Hurdles Chris Lang (WEN) went through in 58.09 to win his event. Julie Pendred (BHA) ran 72.75 to win the females.
The 200s saw a fluctuation of times due to the wind speeds. Heat 1 was lucky with a +2.0 wind to serve some good times. Cooper Sherman took the win out in 20.96. Next best was Derek Okolo (WEN) who scored 439 points with a time of 24.51. Nice job for a new athlete!
Conrad Oberholzer (BHA) also did well to score 430 points with his time of 24.67. The women had a blistering first heat with Nyajima Jock (WEN) took out the victory, as well as the OPEN record. She smashed the record (24.6) with a time of 23.95 into a -1.0 Headwind. WOWWW!! Grace Kelly (BHA) fought hard to run 25.00 to score 453 points. Shakira Lual (BHA) also ran terrifically, running 27.36 to score 441 points.
In the longer event, the 3000m, Ben Mornane (EKA) won the first heat of the mens in a time of 9:16.42. Jordan Mayston (EKA) was next from Ballarat in 9:26.78. Katherine Dowie (EKA) competed in this race and finished 7th in the mens, while being 1st in the womens. She ran a time of 9:54.52 to score 434 points. The 5000m saw only two competitors, Mitchell Thompson (WEN) and Carla Maxwell (WEN) who both won their respective categories.
