AVSL Rd 7 Wrap Up

Track

What a special round we had last weekend… From the news articles hyping up the athletes, to records being broken, to a generally great day all around. Aren’t we all so lucky to be involved in athletics in Ballarat? This is the most open records that have fallen in a long time, years!

First we saw the boys take to the 1500m, Our winner overall was Jordan Mayston (EKA) running a time of 4:10.98. Our most impressive point scorer from the boys was Mitch Korosec (WEN) with a time of 4:17.35 scoring 412 points. Well done Mitch.

The girls saw Katherine Dowie (EKA) dominate the 1500m running a time of 4:28.38, scoring herself an impressive 454 points. Honourable mention goes to Eleanor Downey (EKA) for scoring 400 points for her club.

In the 100m there were a variety of standout results. Luckily for the first heat the wind was just below 2.0 so Cooper Sherman (BHA) was able to run 10.40, to break his own record. This scored him 484 points. Nelson Banigo (BHA) and Jace Murray (WEN) were equal 2nd in points both scoring 416. The women’s race was built up before it began, lots of hype around who will break the record. Unfortunately for them the wind recorded as +3.4 deeming the race as illegal. Nyajima Jock (WEN) took the win in a hard battle against a close Mackenzie Estlick (WEN) and Armani Anderson (BHA). Mackenzie was the highest scorer with 485 points. It is also worth mentioning the lowest scoring points in heat 1 was 397, what a quick race!

In the short distance of the steeple Archer Spackman (BYC) took the victory running a time of 7:21.67. In the women’s steeple Katrina Prior (BYC) took the stage by herself to claim victory on her run. Riley Shillito (BYC) ran a gutsy 2000m steeple to run 6:22.29, scoring 439 points. Ben Stevens was also the only competitor in the men’s 3000m, running 9:43.46.

Moving to the 400m, the dramatised matchup between state relay teammates was an exciting match up to watch. Cooper Sherman took the victory running a 46.05 season opener to score 495 points. 2nd and 3rd was a hard battle between Patrick Martin (BHA) and Hudson Downes (WEN) where Pat took 2nd in 47.26 and Hudson in 47.57. Cooper’s run was a record, however Hudson was the highest point scorer, with 498 points. In the women’s Nyajima Jock (WEN) once again broke her own record to take victory. She finished in a time of 55.36 to score 458 points.

The hurdles saw only a couple of competitors. However our attention turns to Chris Lang (WEN) who broke the Mens 60+ 100m hurdles record, he previously owned the record, lowering his time to 20.81 seconds. Congratulations Chris!

Field

Moving over to the field section, in the javelin for the men’s Marcus Downes (WEN) had the greatest performance. He threw 37.73m to score 357. Do I even have to explain who was the best in the women’s? Yes it was Kim Gleeson (BYC) who scored 342 to top the women’s.

The pole Vault saw some more records fall. The women’s saw Summer Jenkins (BHA) improving upon herself, vaulting herself up to 2.65m, breaking the U16, U17, U18, U20 and Open records. Stephen McCulloch (BHA) also bettered his own 50+ record, where he jumped 2.55m to take the win for the mens.

Shot put saw Emma Werner (EKA) throw the furthest. 10.25m was unable to be beaten by anyone else. Conrad Oberholzer was the performer for the men’s throwing 9.27m

Purv Patel (WEN) had the greatest influence on the jumps, scoring 406 points with a jump of 12.41, however it was wind aided (+2.2) Summer Jenkins had a day out scoring 432 points with her jump of 10.52m.
