Community connect
The Ballarat athletics community is built on support, teamwork, and a shared love of the sport. Whether you’re competing, coaching, volunteering, or cheering from the sidelines, you’re part of something bigger — a network of people who show up, help out, and celebrate each other’s efforts.
The Cross Country season is entering its final stretch, with just two rounds remaining in September. From cold mornings and challenging courses to road relays and muddy trails, our athletes have continued to show the determination, camaraderie and community spirit that make cross country so special. As we head towards the final rounds, there’s still plenty to run for, cheer for and celebrate — and we’re proud to see Ballarat athletes continuing to turn up, support one another and represent their clubs with pride.
This newsletter’s purpose is to share highlights, recognise efforts, and keep everyone connected across our local athletics family. If you or your club would like to share achievements or updates, please email these to admin@athleticsballarat.com.au

Volunteer highlight
Corinna Preston

I joined Ballarat Harriers at 16 when I started going out with my now husband, Andrew. I developed an interest in getting fit, having never really been a runner. My previous sports had been indoor cricket and a little bit of netball.
Over the years I’ve met so many amazing people through Ballarat Harriers and the other Ballarat clubs, many of whom have become some of my closest friends. Although there is rivalry on the track, I have a lot of respect for so many athletes, officials and volunteers.
I’ve never considered myself a particularly talented runner, but I’ve always enjoyed pushing myself and setting goals. These days I balance competing with being an active committee member and volunteering. I also love sharing the history of athletics with newer members, keeping those stories alive and reflecting on some of the great moments and people who have shaped athletics in Ballarat.
What do you love about athletics?
Definitely the people, friendships and sense of community. Athletics has been part of my life since I was 16 and has given me lifelong friendships and so many wonderful memories. I also really value the history of our sport and enjoy helping make sure those stories aren’t lost. I enjoy running for fitness and it allows me time to clear my mind and enjoy the outdoors.
What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
I have been involved in the Ballarat Harriers and Athletics Ballarat for 36 years. I was a bit of a tomboy growing up and still love camping, being outdoors, sitting around a fire with a drink and good company. I’m also a problem solver — once I get an idea in my head, I don’t just want it done today… I want it done yesterday! 🙂
If you could give one tip to athletes (or parents), what would it be?
Keep sport enjoyable. Goals and competition are important, but they need to be appropriate for the athlete’s age and stage. The friendships, experiences and enjoyment that come from being involved in sport can last much longer than any result.
What’s been your most memorable moment as a volunteer?
Being awarded Life Membership of Ballarat Harriers alongside Andrew was incredibly special. More recently, being involved in organising and celebrating Ballarat Harriers’ 135 anniversary has meant a lot to me. It has given me the opportunity to look back at the club’s incredible history, recognise the people who have contributed over many years and help preserve those stories for the next generation.

Getting to know our athletes
Ben Ludbrook
How did you first get into athletics, and what keeps you coming back to the sport?
I first got into athletics through primary school. Our teacher encouraged us to participate in a 6k fun run where I ended up winning my age group. I really enjoyed it which lead me to joining a club and getting a coach. It all took off from there.
I love how running gives me an opportunity to challenge myself and work towards a specific goal to try achieve. It gives me opportunities to travel and compete in places I’ve never been before.
What’s your favourite event – and why does it stand out to you?
Do you have any pre-race rituals or superstitions?
I’m not very strict with any pre-race routines. I usually find trying to be as relaxed as possible going into a race works best for me.
What’s been your most memorable moment in athletics so far?
Competing for Australia in the half marathon at the Uni games in 2026 was an awesome opportunity and something I will never forget.
What do you love most about being part of the Ballarat athletics community?
I love being able to run with and compete against many of my good mates.
What’s your go-to meal or treat after a big meet or training session?
Mandatory post race protein milk and Pizza post race.
What does a typical training week look like for you?
